I’m working on Elogio de la Danza by Leo Brouwer.

And although I haven’t had an official lesson on this piece yet I really want to go in knowing a bit about it. Does anyone know of any articles written regarding the piece.

I’m just starting to analyze it and I haven’t cracked it yet, and that means I’m just playing notes, not cool, I see tons of dynamics which I adhere to, I need to know what makes this thing gel together. So any info is welcome, and if you know of any articles that will point me in the right directions that would be great. Or if you’ve played the piece and have some pearls of wisdom do tell! In any case I’ll have my first lesson on it this Thursday!

Leo Brouwer

This “Exploratory phase” is defined by its steadily increasing harmonic vocabulary. Elogia de la Danza uses the rhythmic-cell technique of the “Ballets russes” as Brouwer terms them of Igor Stravinsky.

Other works of this phase include- Canticum ,La espiral eterna ,Parabola and Tarantos -which represents a nexus of two very different musical traditions re of the spanish flamenco tarantos and the formal innovation of Karlheinz Bouwer known a “moment-form”-and Music with Orchestra Concerto 1 The influences of this phase are such figures of the avant-garde as Hans Lw Henze and Karlheinz Stockhausen.

A study of these composers and their works will support your overall understanding and the nature of Brouwer’s compositional approach. Each Work from this phase represents a considerable step being taken into the contemporary arena, a step most guitar composers have been reluctant to take.

I would take extra care in analysing and understanding the brouwrr, displaced accents and syncopation. I Lento- the careful use of contrasting accents bar 7 and overall dynamics which range from ppp to ff.

Vivace- “golpe sobre el puent. I think I had like 3 cups of coffee, and looked through different books both theory and analysis technique based. All of which helped but of course merely gave candle in the darkness.

Briuwer for the input and I’ll take the cell form idea and start flying with that.

I thought about Stockhausen as I was reading this piece I wanted to say Serialist, but I wasn’t sure, now I’ve got some hints ideas and clear cut musical time periods to work with.

It’s daanza serialist but I get what your saying with cell figures and the ballet Russe. Board index All times are UTC.
