Caroline is a mother of delightful, year-old twins.
Each chapter is written through the eyes of one of the people involved, eg police, siblings, foster carers etc and divulges more information each time. Sometimes, life goes on. But it will make you think and the story will stay with you long after you finish the last page.
It actually took me a while to figure out this book was fiction. It’s written in the form where each chapter is from a different perspective, from the sister Lauren, to the police Sargent, the brother, sister, various foster parents, reporters, coroners etc this is interesting approach and allows the whole multi faceted view of a single event.
The story coming from the mother is that she sent 5 year old Jake Cashman and his brother, 3 year old Harley, to the shops to buy cigarettes.
Firstly, the death of little boy Jake, unmarked except for an indentation on his head, from blunt force trauma, the knowledge of the reader immediately that what happened is not the story the mother is saying. I was expecting there to be a different link from the past to the present and so I was a little puzzled when I realised I was down to the last couple of chapters.
In modern times, it still seems to most of us that the death of a child is a gross violation of the pact we have with our God. Was the novel meant to be a historical record, had they all been called into a Royal Commission, were they putting together their memoirs?
Anybody can have their own child. Not highbrow, b Enjoyed this book. I was wondering whether the language was a little bit too ochre and whether this might limit the ability its international appeal. Jake passes away the next day from his injuries, caused by blunt force trauma and the surgeon admits that he has noticed indications of other abuse, older wounds that have healed, probably without medical assistance.
I absolutely loved this book. Harley was able to escape, run home and raise the alarm.
This new court case will catapult her into the spotlight again but it will also force her to confront what caroljne happened that day to her brother so long ago. So why, suddenly, are we meeting her?

In some ways Ghost Child is almost like a non-fiction book, overingtonn it tells the story through the veiwpoint of multiple witnesses – eg the carolinee police officer, journalists, social workers etc.
In fact, you could be forgiven for mistaking this book as non-fiction instead of a work of fiction.
